Mokuhi Sonorities

Nicolas has launched Mokuhi Sonorities, a non-profit music label that emphasizes experimental and adventurous music-making with storytelling at its core. Mokuhi supports like-minded artists who prioritize music as an art form.

Storytelling music label

In 2023 Nicolas started his own music label MOKUHI SONORITIES as a reaction against the ongoing economic pressure in the arts and especially the music industry (the word itself says it all).
MOKUHI encourages adventurous music-making, emphasizing improvisation and instant composition, as long as storytelling remains at the core.
MOKUHI also questions the format of listening. Digital streaming/downloading has become common and gives the opportunity to spread the music worldwide. MOKUHI is a "city"label. It's about finding the right gatekeepers/playlists in each city or cloud of cities.
The physical object carries no longer the obligation of the music. Of course cassette, cd and vinyl can still be present, but this object can become so much more: a comment or attribute to the music, a complementary piece of art, a 3D printing guide, ...
As such MOKUHI is a non-profit platform for like-minded artists who approach music primarily as an art form rather than a commercial product

Projects/Bands being released by Mokuhi  Sonorities

Bodem

Bodem is an instrumental jazz trio that features collective improvisations and intelligent songwriting. Saxophonist Adia Vanheerentals founded the band together with drummer Anke Verslype and guitarist Willem Malfliet. Their sound is influenced by Scandinavian jazz (Christian Wallumrød, Skúli Sverrisson, etc.) as well as the energy of the Chicago scene, with musicians such as Matana Roberts and Henry Threadgill being notable inspirations. Their debut album is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2023.

Jürgen Augusteyns - The king of torpor

Jürgen Augusteyns (°Gent, 1972) is a guitarist/improviser.

Inspired by guitarists like Loren Connors, Chris Forsyth, and Mick Turner, as well as musicians and bands such as Sir Richard Bishop, Oren Ambarchi, and Six Organs of Admittance, Jürgen seeks to create his own musical universe, not shying away from experimentation.

On his first release for Mokuhi Sonorities, abstraction and dissonance make way for harmony and clearly defined themes once again.

"The king of torpor" is a quest for healing and solace in a world of too much, too loud, too fast. Because it is essential.

kaijin kaiwa

master of the universe

Second release on the MOKUHI label with gituarist Sjoerd Bruil (Millionaire, Dez Mona, Mauro, Kaset Hitam) and label owner and bassist Nicolas Rombouts. They explore the world of drones with electric guitar, electric bass, noise and late night dark guitar riffs in a Japanese suburb. Started out as pure impro sessions, the final recordings are a edited selections with some minor additions by piano, a floortom and a Juno 106. Deep listening assured, deep fried Ebi tempura too.

Chaos of the Haunted Spire

Saxophonist Andrew Claes and drummer Teun Verbruggen continue their musical partnership as a duo, building around the confrontation of acoustic and electronic instruments to create massive grooves, tangible patterns of noise, and genuine free jazz. Their new music will emerge somewhere in 2024..
